Two Great Expectations adaptations may be on the way, but can either top classic versions of Bleak House or A Tale of Two Cities?
This 15-part BBC serial could be the finest Dickens adaptation of them all. A budget of £8 million allowed for pristine sets and a huge ensemble cast, spearheaded by Gillian Anderson as tortured aristocrat Lady Dedlock and Anna Maxwell Martin as heroine Esther Summerson. The series’ dark undertones of deceit gripped around six million people each week in the UK, while a remarkable awards haul included five BAFTAs and two Emmys.
